Harassment by Dean Sukumar Nandi

POSTED BY aaa

Here at IIT Guwahati, we all are facing problems on a regular basis created by Prof Sukumar Nandi who is heading the Academic Sections. We are trying to give voice to the harassed students of IITG who have been a victim of harassment, demoralization, partiality, politics, humiliation by Prof Nandi.
Prof Nandi, by his petty politics and low thinking has spoiled the entire environment at IITG and the entire academic temperament is getting degraded.

Kindly post the problems faced by you so that Prof Nandi cannot continue with his tyrannous attitude.

  1. Au contraire, I think Nandi sir has successfully brought back academic section and its activities on track. Everybody knows what happened under the tenure of our last DOAA, Academic section was such a mess. Unexpected BCs, cheating during examinations and what not!! He has changed the very way our academic section works, and in the process I agree he made some harsh but necessary decisions.

From what I hear, these are the two major arguments against Nandi sir:

    1) Mobile phones: I don't understand why people carry cellphones to the examination hall when it is clearly banned with a proper notice and then make such a fuss after getting caught. During his tenure, we saw watches hanging on the wall of every examination room, what else you need your mobile phone for?
    2) Robotics participation: I am not sure what he could have done, but postponing midsems does not seem viable to me, at least. What would he do if the next group of students approaches him to postpone their midsems for a dance competition or singing competition or pottery making competition, etc. How is he going to decide which competition is worth postponing midsems for?

    Cheers,

  2. NKG, it seems you haven't faced nandi's malice and ill-willed intentions. The major arguments against nandi are neither mobile phones nor robotics participation. These are petty things to worry about. I am against nandi because he's instilling negativity among students by creating problems for them. I don't say he is wrong every time but there is also an art of denying. It matters how you deny things. If I were DOAA and a student comes to me asking for few more courses , I might not allow him and I'll say few positive words trying to help him in his despair and asking him to take it slow with a smile. But you must see how nandi confronts such matter and how he plays games. Nandi enjoys it very much. First he thinks let the student roam in the campus and go to different people to make him feel that he is powerful. So, he will say 'get it done from your department'. If you get it done, he will create another problem and you will wander more and in the end he will reply 'tumhara kaam nahi hoga. jiske paas jana hai jao. nandi bahot bada admi hai . tum kuch nahi bigad sakte mera' . Couldn't he say at the first place that he can't give more courses as its against the rule.
The Politics he plays can be imagined by the fact that someone with a BSc(physics) from a university can become professor in CSE in iitg and then head the academic affairs.
So, NKG its obvious you haven't heard such words from nandi so you are talking about mobile phones and robotics participation. I am talking deep here. Do you want your iitg to get ruined in next few years because of bad leadership so that in next few years everybody will laugh at our degrees or do you want our iit at par with other iits. If we don't take step here, after few years iit punjab, orissa, bihar will have a better ranking than us and nobody will come to guwahati. Its our responsibility to assure that leadership of our administration is in good hands.

  3. i agree with king about the attitude of nandi and the pride he takes in seeing students suffer due to the mostly silly so called self-made RULES..an example of it is what happened last summer.. nandi made another one of his ridiculous rules that "Dropped courses cannot be registered in summers".
Now we generally drop courses when we are unable to take the burden and are not certain about passing the course. But according to Mr Nandi's RULE the right way is that the student should first FAIL in the course, have a big F in his trancript and then happily take the course in Summer..such is his level of thinking.
When the matter was taken to the director by the students who were suffering due to the rule the rule was canceled at ones.
But Mr Nandi could not digest this..this Summer he again has the the RULE with a slight modification that only students with no F grades can register for dropped courses in Summers...
Carry on Nandi...we r impressed by ur strictly followed set of Rules which have no place for the Students' Welfare. I think there shouldn't be any distinction made between the dropped courses and F grade courses..we should be given the freedom to do the courses according to our convenience. that doesn't harm anyone..does it?

  10. Don't recruit any more PhDs from IIT Kharagpur as faculty. They are spoiling the CSE department. If possible, demote or terminate the contracts of the current faculty members who have done PhDs from IIT Kharagpur.

  11. Prof. Nandi can be given the sole credit of bringing back order in Academic Section and IITG as a whole. I wouldn't be surprised if the hateful comments are posted by people from Academic Section. To the best of my knowledge and experience, every action by him is for the benefit of students. Its just that we the students are not mature enough for understanding the issue from top down and into the future. Often, one can find him worrying about academic and institute issues, even in his other role as Professor.
